📚 Word Families You'll Practice

🎓 Why Rhyming Matters for Early Readers

Rhyming is one of the earliest and most important skills in learning to read. When children recognise that cat, bat, and hat all share the same ending sound (-at), they start to see the patterns inside words — a skill called phonological awareness. This dramatically speeds up how quickly they learn to decode new words.

Research consistently shows that children with strong rhyming skills learn to read faster, spell more accurately, and develop a much larger vocabulary by age 8.

🎵 About Rhyme Time

A CVC word is displayed and read aloud by the game. The child picks the word that rhymes with it from three choices. Each round, the word and its rhyme belong to the same word family — for example, the -at family includes cat, bat, hat, mat, rat, and sat. The game covers all five short vowel families and tracks stars for each vowel.

🤔 About Odd One Out

Four CVC words are shown — three from the same word family, and one that doesn't belong. The child must identify the odd word. This builds a deeper level of sound discrimination: not just "does this rhyme?" but "which one sounds different from the rest?" — a more challenging and rewarding phonics skill.
